CHAPTER 19

No one spoke. The only sound in the night air was the rustle of tires against asphalt, growing louder each second.

“Get down!” Billy finally hissed. “She’ll see us!”

Without thinking, Erasmo responded to the command and slunk down as far as possible. He looked over to see Rat hiding as well. A look of shock covered his friend’s face, as if, despite all of his professed faith in Billy, he couldn’t believe this was actually happening.

Erasmo listened carefully as the Malibu approached. He closed his eyes and willed the car to just keep going, to keep drifting down the road and not ever come back. But then he heard the Malibu roll to a stop, and cold stabs of panic penetrated his belly. The car’s engine shuddered off not far from the truck.

“Call the police,” Erasmo whispered.

“Let’s make sure it’s her first,” Billy said.

“Call them now,” Erasmo said, shaking his clenched fist.

They heard a car door close. The distinct clicks of high heels against pavement drifted into the cab.

Erasmo’s head pounded in rhythm with his heart. This couldn’t be happening. But was it? Was it really happening? Only one way to know for sure. He slowly crept up to the door’s window, eyes closed, waiting until his nose was pressed against the glass to open them.

The woman was absolutely riveting. Chestnut hair fell in lustrous waves down her strong, sensuous back. Her plum-colored dress shimmered and undulated around her, the wind playing with its sheer fabric. Silver two-inch heels, glittering in the night, carried her to the entryway. After a brief pause to adjust her dress, she rapped on the front door.

This wasn’t real. There was no way it could be. But despite his psyche’s feeble protestations, the young woman continued to exist, checking her watch as she waited on the porch.

“I’m calling the police,” Rat said, taking his phone out.

“No,” said Billy. “It’s too soon. If the police come now, all they’ll find is the two of them talking.”

“Then how are we supposed to know when to call?” Erasmo asked. He was thankful that at least a part of his mind was dealing with the task at hand, while the rest of it flailed, searching for a glimmer of understanding.

“Why would you even want to call the police?” said Billy, tauntingly. “I thought you said that nothing was going to happen. I guess there’d be no need to call the police then, right?”

“Well,” Erasmo said, “something is obviously going on, although I don’t know what the hell it is.” He grasped for even one reassuring thought but found none. “Let’s say that something really is about to happen,” Erasmo said. “How are we going to know when to call the police?”

“I’ve given that some thought,” Billy said. “We have to go in there.”

Erasmo almost objected out of habit but held back while he considered his options. Just making a run for it was out of the question. He had to stay for Rat and the woman in the plum-colored dress.
